Bill Vickers, S/Sgt, 3rd Bn Hq. Co.,34th Infantry, 24th Infantry Div. - letter to Author, 16 May 2011

I was radioman for Col. Postlethwait. Harold DUNCAN was the second radioman. Both of us were in the first landing craft. The Colonel told me to follow him. Duncan went to the right after landing. When I hit the beach I hit the dirt behind the Colonel. My hand was inches from a land mine. Harold Duncan hit a landmine and it blew up. I wrote Harold's family in New Jersey about Harold but never got a reply. He was a good person and too young to die.

Decades later, Frank related that we had been directly behind the radio man, Harold Duncan—a nice young man from Englewood, New Jersey — as we ran up the beach. He was never found, or was never seen again. Frank remembers what he thinks was an arm flying by him as he was knocked down.
