THREE CREWMAN OF YMS-46

16 Feb 1945

off Black Beach, Corregidor

"..the Japanese occasionally managed to get off some counter-fire using three-inch field pieces cleverly concealed in small caves located about halfway up the eastern slopes of Topside. Most of the Japanese shells fell short of the destroyers, but one of them scored a direct hit on the YMS-46, one of three minesweepers clearing the approaches to Black beach. The shell exploded midship, killing three crewmen and wounding four others."
